Date Last Updated: 1 July 2025

1. Policy Statement

As a self-employed tutor/SEN support provider, I am committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people in my care. I aim to create a safe, positive, and respectful learning environment free from harm, abuse, or neglect.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all children and young people I work with and covers both in-person and online tuition or support sessions. It also applies to any adults I collaborate with during the course of my services.

3. Legal Framework

This policy is based on the following UK laws and guidance:

  • Children Act 1989 & 2004

  • Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE)

  • Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023)

  • The Prevent Duty (2015)

  • Data Protection Act 2018 (GDPR compliance)

4. Responsibilities

I will:

  • Complete and refresh safeguarding training regularly;

  • Report any safeguarding concerns following proper procedure;

  • Record any safeguarding issues clearly, factually, and securely;

  • Maintain professional boundaries at all times;

  • Communicate openly with parents/carers regarding any issues or concerns.

5. Types of Abuse

I understand the four main categories of abuse:

  • Physical abuse

  • Emotional abuse

  • Sexual abuse

  • Neglect

I will remain alert to signs of abuse or changes in behavior and act promptly.

6. Responding to Safeguarding Concerns

If a child discloses something or I suspect abuse, I will:

  • Listen calmly and supportively without asking leading questions;

  • Avoid promising confidentiality—explain I may need to pass on concerns;

  • Record exactly what the child said, when and where;

  • Contact the appropriate local safeguarding contact or NSPCC Helpline: 0808 800 5000;

  • Inform parents/carers unless doing so may put the child at further risk.

7. Record Keeping and Data Protection

  • I will securely store all lesson records and safeguarding notes.

  • I will only collect necessary data from parents/carers and will store it in line with GDPR.

  • All records will be kept confidential and only be shared with the consent from parents / carers’ and lawful.
